What to do in Ottawa
Museums and Art Galleries
Come and get your fill of culture in Ottawa’s numerous museums, and experience the best Canada has to offer. Admire our national art collection, pay tribute to Canada’s military past, see one of the world’s best collections of aircraft, learn about the history of the Rideau Canal, or have fun with science.
You can’t come to Canada’s capital without seeing Parliament Hill. This is Ottawa’s most visited attraction, and the very symbol of the city. The heart of government, it is also the most popular place to celebrate national holidays and events with family and friends all year long.
Welcome to North America’s oldest still-operating canal. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Rideau Canal winds through the nation’s capital before reaching the Ottawa River locks. Starting in May, the waterway attracts recreational boaters, kayak enthusiasts and scenic cruise boats. But once winter sets in, the canal becomes the longest skating rink in the world.
Biking in Ottawa
Three hundred kilometres of bike paths provide a great way to visit the region’s many parks, green spaces, gardens and historic sites. These paths in the Gatineau Hills are ideal for enjoying the region’s scenic wonders. And why not have a picnic along the Ottawa River, and ride along the north shore to take in the great view of Parliament Hill?
Founded in 1827, the ByWard is one of the country’s oldest markets. Vendors from all over the region set up their stalls here at dawn to sell flowers, fresh vegetables and even handicrafts. This is the place for a great brunch, lunch or dinner in a restaurant, pub or café – and for a night on the town, you can’t do better than the neighbourhood’s trend-setting clubs.
